Quickly the Argos have compiled a very impressive list of players. Today proved no different as the Argos inked Justin Phinisee to their 2013 roster.

Justin thrived as an all around athletic standout prep athlete from Compton, California in many different positions. Eventually he would find a home at cornerback and special teams return ace. After a record setting career at the University of Oregon as a three year starter. The soft spoken and sometimes quiet leader lets his play do the talking. Phinisee rose to the top of the college game by averaging 12.4 yards per punt return and is currently ranked 8th on the schools list and one of its best in close to 20 years.

“There are so many possibilities with him at corner. The success of the offense is predicated on how many touches we get on the ball during a game and with “Phin” at the corner we will get those touches on the ball. He can singlehandedly shut down one side of the field for us” Head Coach, JJ Fayed had to say about his new defensive back

In college Phinisee was ranked eighth in tackling for the University of Oregon (and 2nd in their secondary) missing one game with a minor leg injury. Against U.C.L.A. he was awarded the game ball for his efforts.

In the 2006 NFL Draft the Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Justin in the seventh round. With a short lived career with the Bucs, he would spend time on practice rosters for the Kansas City Chiefs, New England Patriots, St Louis Rams & Dallas Cowboys.

Justin would attempt to diversify his career in a short stint with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League in 2008.

After his short life in the CFL, Justin’s career would take a new direction by signing with the Utah Blaze of the Arena Football League. Starting in 7 games in 2010 Justin had good showings but even Justin knew his skills were suited for outdoor play.

Phinisee was found by Assistant Head Coach and Special Teams Coordinator, Rick Simpson. The two have remained friends after working for the Blaze. “I told J this is a guy that can make an impact, a guy you want on your team” said Simpson.

The ownership was impressed with his showing at the combine as well at Spence Eccles Field House in early January. “I saw him run his 40 and the combination of his size and speed was outstanding” stated an excited Mace Sorensen, Team President.

Justin is excited to get the season started. “I love football, to play the game. To get this opportunity to continue my career and show the scouts and the fans what I can bring to a team is a true blessing” stated a calm Phinisee “we need to get this thing popping, Coach and the front office is putting together a good team, we should have a very successful season”

Another piece of an already formidable secondary has joined the ranks of the Argos. Justin is sure to make an impact on his teammates and his opponents. The front office staff is working hard to ensure a championship comes home to Salt Lake.

The Argos will play their home games at Cottonwood High School. Practices are open to fans and the media at Granite Park Middle School. Tickets are $10.00 for Adults, $7.50 for students and seniors.
